The only team that stopped PSG from winning 7 trophies in 2025 Chelsea Football Club

In the calendar year 2025, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) achieved an extraordinary level of dominance, winning six major trophies and establishing themselves as one of the greatest club sides in modern football history. Under manager Luis Enrique, PSG secured:

•  Trophée des Champions (French Super Cup) – January 2025

•  Ligue 1 title

•  Coupe de France

•  UEFA Champions League (their first-ever, completing a continental treble)

•  UEFA Super Cup

•  FIFA Intercontinental Cup (December 2025, defeating Flamengo on penalties)

This sextuple matched the record previously set by Barcelona (2009) and Bayern Munich (2020), marking a historic year for the club and French football.

However, PSG were on the verge of an unprecedented septuple – seven official trophies in a single calendar year – a feat never before accomplished due to the unique scheduling of FIFA competitions in 2025 (the expanded Club World Cup in summer and the separate Intercontinental Cup in December).

The seventh trophy in contention was the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, the inaugural edition of the expanded 32-team tournament held in the United States.

How Chelsea Stopped PSG

In the final of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, played on July 13, 2025, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey (attendance: 81,118), Chelsea FC defeated PSG 3-0 in a stunning upset.

•  Key moments:

•  22nd minute: Cole Palmer opened the scoring with a curled finish after a layoff from Malo Gusto, capitalizing on a turnover by PSG’s Nuno Mendes.

•  30th minute: Palmer doubled the lead with an almost identical curled shot from a long ball by Levi Colwill.

•  43rd minute: Palmer turned provider, assisting summer signing João Pedro for the third goal.

Chelsea’s performance was described as a tactical masterclass by manager Enzo Maresca. The Blues employed aggressive high pressing, man-to-man marking, and rapid counter-attacks, exploiting PSG’s vulnerabilities on transitions and stretching their defense in ways rarely seen that season. PSG, who had not conceded in their previous four tournament games, were overwhelmed in the first half and could not recover despite second-half substitutions.

Late frustration boiled over for PSG, with midfielder João Neves sent off in the 85th minute for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair, leaving them with 10 men.

This defeat denied PSG the Club World Cup title and ended their dreams of a historic septuple. Chelsea, qualifying via their past Champions League success and recent Conference League win, claimed their second Club World Cup (after 2021) and proved to be the only team capable of halting PSG’s otherwise flawless trophy sweep in 2025.

Chelsea’s victory not only crowned them world champions but also provided a blueprint for countering PSG’s dominant style, highlighting the Blues’ clinical finishing and defensive resilience on the global stage.
