Super Eagles Secure Thrilling 3-2 Victory Over Tunisia in AFCON 2025

Nigeria’s Super Eagles edged Tunisia 3-2 in a high-intensity match that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the
final whistle. The win secures Nigeria’s qualification for the knockout stages and avenges their 2021 AFCON round-of-16 defeat to the Carthage Eagles.

Victor Osimhen opened the scoring in the 44th minute with a powerful header from a pinpoint cross by Ademola Lookman, breaking his tournament goal drought and sending Nigeria into the lead at halftime.

The second half exploded into action. Captain Wilfred Ndidi doubled the advantage early on with a clinical header from a set piece, before Ademola Lookman sealed what seemed like a comfortable win around the 67th minute with a composed finish after a swift team move involving Alex Iwobi and Osimhen.

Tunisia fought back valiantly. Montassar Talbi pulled one back with a header, before a controversial late penalty — awarded after VAR intervention for handball — was converted by Ali Abdi in the closing stages, setting up a tense finale. Despite seven minutes of added time, Nigeria held firm to claim all three points.

The victory highlights Nigeria’s attacking flair, with Lookman providing two assists and a goal, while Osimhen and Ndidi delivered key moments. Coach Eric Chelle’s side showed resilience in defense despite the late scare, dominating large spells and creating numerous chances.

Tunisia’s spirited comeback added drama, but they couldn’t find an equalizer. The result leaves Nigeria a top Group C with six points from two games, while Tunisia remain in contention with three points.

Nigeria’s next match is against Uganda on December 30, where a positive result could secure top spot. Coach Chelle praised his team’s character: “We showed heart and quality today. This win is big for us, but we keep pushing forward.”

This dominant yet hard-fought performance reinforces Nigeria’s credentials as serious contenders in the race for the TotalEnergies AFCON 2025 title.
